Swann Morton Surgical Blades
Consisting of 34 blade shapes and 12 handles the Swann Morton general range is used throughout all surgical disciplines including Cardiology, Orthopaedics and Reconstructive surgery.
The "choice" lies with the surgeon and their expertise as to which size and shape of blade is most appropriate for a particular procedure and which handle provides them with the flexibility, dexterity and depth of field they personally require.
The range does include user specific products such as the E/11 for Chiropody , the 12d and 15c for Dentistry and the SG3 for minor Skin Grafts.
Below is the full range of surgical blades and handles.

Swann-Morton manufacture a range of carbon or stainless steel sterile surgical blades ideally suited for chiropodists and podiatrists.
Over time we can develop corns and calluses in high pressure areas of the feet such as the metatarsal heads, the sides and tops of toes and the heel which require regular pairing down or scalpel debridement by a trained Podiatrist. The Swann-Morton Sabre E/11 blade remains popular amongst Podiatrists for removing those areas of hard skin thus minimising discomfort. The special closed razor like cutting edge is ideal for this procedure.
The most common corn is a hard corn (Heloma Durum) which appears as a distinctive hard, yellow mass with a white centre. Enucleation (removing the nucleus) of corns is an operative technique to reduce a corn so that it is no longer painful, a procedure which often involves the use of a number 15T blade.
Nail care may be needed for thick painful and difficult to manage toenails, in growing nails, and fungal nails whilst Nail Surgery may be the only permanent solution for painful, ingrowing, involuted or thickened deformed toenails. The Fine SM61 and SM62 single bevel blades act a like a small chisel which can be inserted in and around the nail whilst the PD81 blade used in conjunction with the slim barrelled PD handle offer an extra level of finish to the nail.

With dental and facial aesthetics in mind Swann-Morton offer the versatile Fine range of handles and blades. The cutting edge expertise embodied within these blades meets the most demanding and complex requirements presented by modern day Periodontal, Cosmetic, Oral Implantology and Maxillofacial procedures.
The EU Sharps Directive compliant sterile retractable safety scalpel supports existing safe passing protocols and encourages safe disposal of sharps in the dental practice. It is currently available in three blade shapes, 10, 11P and 15 which are colour-coded for ease of recognition.
The single use sterile blade remover assists in the safe removal of a contaminated surgical blade from the traditional metal surgical handles whilst the Cygnetic range combines a thicker stainless steel blade with a special innovative handle which grips the blade firmly on both sides providing additional lateral strength. The system minimises the handling of the blade when fitting and removing from the handle.
Swann-Morton surgical blades can be used in the surgery for the following:

As explained by Associate Professor Dr. Denis Verwilghen,DVM,MSc,PhD,DES,Dipl ECVS, from the University of Copenhagen who specialises in Equine surgery, a bespoke 20 cm long handle provides a secure anchoring for precision blades of the types commonly used use during equine arthroscopic, tenoscopic and bursoscopic procedures, namely SM63 / 64 / 67 / 68 / 69.
The grip of the handle is located on the outer end whilst the blade fitment end remains smooth in order to minimize trauma to the instrument skin portal. This handle combined with the most specific blade can easily be used for different procedures, amongst which:
Complimenting the existing range of safety products the KLEEN Blade Management System allows for effortless safe attachment and removal of surgical blades from a standard handle. The system which incorporates a quality Swann-Morton surgical blade is designed to operate with most No.3 and No.4 standard surgical handles already in circulation within the hospital system thus minimising disruption and cost during the conversion process.
The blade is supplied sterile inside a protective sliding sheath which covers the blade completely thus assisting with accident free handling. The sheath fully exposes the surgical blade when in use with an intuitive lock which prevents any forward movement of the sheath during the procedure. Easy to detach the BMS encapsulates the contaminated sharp which is still visible for the final count and to help ensure safe and responsible disposal.
U.S.Patent No. 8,931,181.
Complimenting the traditional Swann-Morton blade shapes and developed potentially for more complex and challenging surgical procedures in such disciplines as reconstruction, ophthalmic, cardiology and even hair restoration the surgeons may sometimes prefer our Fine Range.
For use within rigorous Orthopedic and General surgical procedures 'Cygnetic' ® provides the surgeon with additional strength and stability through the patented combination of its specially designed blade and handle. Its functionality will assist the nurse with safe and easy blade attachment and removal whilst the simple disassembly for cleaning will be welcomed by the decontamination department.
Initially the range will include four instantly recognizable stainless steel blade shapes the CYG 10, CYG 11, CYG 15 and the CYG 20 available in boxes of 50, sterile and individually wrapped in foil packets which can be used in conjunction with the unique Cygnetic ® Stainless Steel handle.
Manufactured from a thicker specification of carbon steel than the standard blade range to provide the Orthopaedic Surgeon with added strength when working close to the bone and within the joints.
Standard, Guarded and Sabre Disposable Sterile Scalpels offer convenience in a number of user environments be it on the ward, in emergency or trauma units or even out in the field with the Paramedics. The Guarded Scalpel along with the minor "thumb" scalpels are also available in bulk and non sterile and form an integral part of many customised procedure trays, packs and kits.
Swann-Morton also offer a range of high visibility red handled Retractable Safety Scalpels to reinforce existing safe passing procedures and protocols within the Hospital system. These are now available in all the popular shapes 10, 11P, 15, 20, 21, 22, 23 and 24 to assist in compliance with EU directive 2010/32/EU.
Please note that in our experience we feel that the standard sterile unguarded scalpels are not suitable for reprocessing by ETO as this may breach the integrity of the packet.
Designed with a rounded bull nose tip the Swann-Morton family of Stitch Cutters are ideal for the purpose of cutting modern suture materials whilst minimising patient discomfort.
The range consists of the shorter standard stitch cutter with a larger area for grip through the "Midi" to the "Long" allowing for a more aseptic technique by operating further away from the wound site yet also allowing better visibility.
This is particularly true of the No.3 fitment or " Baby" Stitch Cutter when used in conjunction with a No.3 Surgical handle.
The PM40 range with it's traditional "Screw Fitting" heavy duty Stainless Steel handle and the PM60 range with a standard blade fitment both include bull nose blades for added safety and protection against accidental sharps injuries. A versatile and comprehensive range for Morticians and Pathologists for use in Autopsy, Histopathology and general Post Mortem procedures.
The range was extended in 2014 with the addition of a No. 22B carbon steel blade with the a "bull nose tip".
The Skin Graft range is used in the surgical removal of a patch of healthy skin from one area of the patient's body which is then transplanted to another area where there has been extensive tissue loss. Skin grafts may be recommended for Burns, specific surgeries that may require skin grafts for healing to occur and for areas of prior infection with extensive skin loss.
They may also be used for cosmetic reasons on reconstructive surgeries (See Dermatome). Still under development the range currently consists of the popular Stainless Steel sterile 158mm Skin Graft Blade which fits our Braithwaite, Cobbett and Watson Skin Graft Handles.
The sterile stainless Cervical Biposy blade is used in conjunction with our Long Stainless Steel Major Handle to take a "cone" biopsy of the tissue in a woman's cervix.
The sterile stainless Myringotomy blade is used in conjunction with the SF1 or SF13 Fine surgical handle in the treatment of "Otitis media" or "Glue ear". The Myringotomy is double egded so allowing for cutting movements in both directions.
The "single use" sterile Swann-Morton Blade Remover or the "multi use" non sterile BRU Blade Remover unit allows for safe and easy removal of all sizes of scalpel blade from both No. 3 and No. 4 handles.
As part of our ongoing commitment to providing a “choice” of safety solutions to health care practitioners thus assisting them in the risk assessment of their own unique work environment whilst achieving compliance to the sharps directive, Swann-Morton have extended their range with the addition of a number of unique products by “Qlicksmart”.
These include the non-sterile BladeFLASK and sterile BladeCASSETTE, BladeSINGLE and BladeneedleSYSTEM.
The Qlicksmart SnapIT is a simply safer way to open glass ampoules and avoid painful and dangerous sharps injuries.
